Hello and Welcome to Pippin's Roost!
I'm sure you're aware that sprouted seeds are an excellent source of vitamins, amino acids, protein and carotenoid colors in a low-fat package. But there are problems associated with sprouting your own seeds, or buying sprouts from the grocery or health food store.

The common way of sprouting requires the careful rinsing and draining of the seeds, up to six times per day. Even so, there is a risk of growing potentially dangerous mold, fungus or other "slime." Some of these molds or fungi could severly hurt or even kill your pets if they eat them. Not only that, but the storage life of already-sprouted seeds is very short, often only a day or two before they start to turn brown. |
Rice Canyon Tropicals Animal Sprout Kits are designed to virtually eliminate the growth of slime, mold and fungus. The seeds, instead of soaking in water, are actually given a more natural soil-like medium, and allowed to grow as plants. When the little guys are big enough, you can put the entire planter into your pet's cage, or cut off just what you want to feed for that meal. The rest of the sprouts just keep growing bigger until they are used! There's no refrigeration necessary! This means that you are serving absolutely fresh food, with all the good stuff intact.
Since we assumed that if you put a planter in with an animal, the animal will chew it, the choice of planter was crucial. So our planter is made of pulped recycled newspaper, and can be chewed to bits without sharp edges that can hurt your pet.
The kits are assembled without the use of any chemicals at all. Not even wetting agents to help the soil medium absorb water. This means that it may look like your seeds will float away the first time you water the kit, but really, that won't happen! Once the fibers absorb the water, it will be easy to keep the kit property moist. You should place your kit on a surface that won't be harmed by water or soil.
RICE CANYON TROPICALS ANIMAL SPROUT KITS were featured in the February 1998 "Herpssstuff" column in Reptiles Magazine, and the April 1998 "Shop Talk" colurn in Bird Talk.
